What’s up y’all, welcome back to the blog!
Lately, I’ve been sharing TONS of different hair lewks with you guys. From my go to tousled waves, to my voluminous curls, straight, to natural, to everything in between, you’ve probably seen it on Instagram, YouTube, or TikTok. And that’s because, I love all things HAIR.
Growing up, I feel like you were either a hair girl or a makeup girl. You either watched JLovesMac1 on YouTube for HOURS trying to perfect your 2010 smokey eye or you begged your mom to buy you hair extensions and learned about the wonder of the double shampoo from Nicole Guerriero. Me? I was the hair gal.
As a young girl, I had no idea what to do with my natural curls. No. Idea. So once I was old enough to learn how to semi flat iron my own hair, I was doing it ALL THE TIME. To the point where my hair was unbelievably short from all the breakage and heat damage. Eventually, I got clip in extensions and learned how to master those guys in high school.
Halfway through my season as a professional cheerleader in 2014, I decided I was done with all of that and committed to a very long time of natural curls. My hair started to grow, was getting healthier and longer, I got regular cuts, and eventually my hair was in a really good place! Fast forward to today, and I’ve got a KILLER hair care routine that allows me to do whatever I want to my hair (yes, heat and extensions included) without visiting that dark place of junior high breakage and heat damage… and today I’m sharing it with you.
THURSDAY
Okay, you might be confused as to why we’re starting on Thursday and also why a day of the week has anything to do with hair care… well, let me explain it to ya!
Thursday is my wash day.
Because of my hair texture, I can get away with not washing my hair for a hot minute. (Seriously, there’s been times that I’ve gone 2 weeks without washing my hair). So instead of washing it every couple days, I wash it once a week. That day of the week is always Thursday. You might be wondering “why Thursday?” and it’s because it’s the perfect day to glow up for the weekend! Everyone knows day 1 hair is horrible to style, so I give myself a grace period before showing up as a full glam chick on a Saturday.
Now, I know I said wash earlier, but what I really meant to say was Olaplex! I got introduced to Olaplex this year and it’s been a GAME CHANGER. Most of my hairdresser friends roll their eyes at the trendy hair products that are always coming out, but time and time again, they’re praising Olaplex! This little bond repair in a bottle has transformed my hair. I see it growing all the time, it’s shiny and healthy, and it even gives my natural curls some extra bounce. So, every Thursday evening I will wet my dirty af hair (not wash, we aren’t there yet – just wet it) and slather a generous amount of Olaplex into my hair. I’ll plop it into a ballerina bun on the top of my head, run through my night routine, and sleep with it overnight. Bonus Tip – sleeping with a plastic bag + bonnet on over your Olaplex will help it siiiiiink into your hair.
FRIDAY
Happy Friday y’all! Today is the real wash day.
Once I wake up and run through my Miracle Morning Routine, every Friday I will head straight into the shower to wash my Olaplex out. You might recall, we didn’t actually shampoo or condition our hair on Thursday, so this is where we’re doing all of that!
When I’m in the shower, the first thing I’ll do is rinse out the Olaplex. She has done her job and is no longer needed! Next up is a detox shampoo. I really love this one by Shea Moisture and pair it with a shampoo brush that I got off Amazon. I love this combo because it really allows me to scrub my scalp and it get it clean after a week of product build-up. Once I’m done going through with the shampoo brush, I’ll add just a little of this charcoal scalp scrub to my hands and really give my scalp a good scrub around the areas that tend to get dirtier, faster (think crown area, facial framing pieces, etc). After, I’ll give my hair a good rinse and follow up with a second shampoo using the best smelling shampoo of ALL TIME. Like I said earlier, I learned the wonder of the double shampoo very early on, and if you’re a product junkie who only washes her hair once a week, you need to double shampoo, okay?
Once we’re shampoo free, I hit my hair with a quick protein mask. I’m not very picky with my in-shower hair masks. When the mask is done setting in, I’ll rinse my hair and throw on the complimentary conditioner to my favourite ever shampoo and let that sit. (If you’re interested in a full-on shower routine, let a girl know in a comment below or on Instagram!)
After I’m out of the shower this is where we put our hard work to the test. The blowout ladies and gents! **There are definitely times where I let my hair air dry and leave it curly. I use the Shea Moisture leave in conditioner and the kids curling cream if I’m doing that!**
I’ve been a Drybar STAN for years now. I was originally introduced on Instagram, and have since then visited a Drybar every single time I find myself in the US (or Vancouver). So it should come as no surprise that all of my hot tools are from Drybar. I absolutely love the Buttercup blowdryer and it cuts down my drying time – which is a win in any curly-haired gals books. But before I apply any heat onto my hair, here is what I put on it, in order:
+ Briogeo Leave In Conditioner
Once all my hair care products are in, I section my hair in half horizontally and then into to equal sections in half vertically. I clip away one half and get to work on my blowout. Lately, I’ve been brushing through with a paddle brush to straighten and dry my hair at the same time and then going in with the Drybar Full Pint blowdry brush to get my hair smooth and silky. This whole process takes me a total of 20 minutes start to finish which is RECORD time for me. I usually finish off my wash/blowdry day with a quick pass of my straightener to really make sure everything is frizz free and hit my roots with my favourite dry shampoo (to get that “dirty hair” vibe when my hair is clean af).
SATURDAY
Saturday is glow up day! After all our prep work, we’re ready to get GLAM for the weekend.
Now, truth be told, I’m not doing a lot on the weekends that really require me to be extra glam lately (shoutout Ms. Rona) but I do love to look my best every single day and a Saturday is a perfect opportunity. So, every Saturday I pop in my Luxy Hair extensions (use code LX-KARLY for $$ off!) and give myself the tousled waves of my DREAMS!
I could go into a step-by-step infographic all about how I curl my hair every week BUT… this video is exactly how I style my hair.
SUNDAY-WEDNESDAY
For the rest of the week, I just let my hair chill. Like I said in the video, doing my hair the way I do it once a week allows me to not have to heat style it more than once or twice per week. Usually, I wake up, throw my extensions in, hit my hair with some leave in conditioner, touch up the front pieces, and I’m good to go!
Every night, I go to bed in a sleep pony (sleep bun isn’t cutting it for me anymore…) and wake up with the messy bedhead curls that carry me throughout my week! Before bed, if my hair is feeling extra dry, I’ll throw on some extra Olaplex oil to sink in overnight and moisturize my ends.
And there you have it folks, my ENTIRE in-depth haircare routine every single week. I’m always switching up the way I style my hair over on Instagram so if you haven’t followed me there, this is a sign 😉
Cheers!
Your girl, Karly
